What Is Spiritual Awakening, Anyway?

Defining Spiritual Awakening

What is Spiritual Awakening and Its Varied Perceptions

Spiritual awakening is a concept that has garnered much attention in recent years, but its true essence often gets lost in the shuffle of different interpretations. At one extreme, it is idealized as a state of perpetual bliss and transcendence, seemingly unattainable for most. On the other hand, there's the perspective that awakening has become more inclusive, with relaxed admission criteria – anyone can be enlightened if they simply give up seeking it and embrace the present moment. But what does spiritual awakening really entail, beyond these two extremes?

The Diverse Notions of Awakening

From Idealization to Inclusivity: The Evolving Perspectives

In my experience, and in my years of leading the School for Awakening, I've come to understand that genuine spiritual awakening is more profound than fleeting moments of extraordinary clarity, love, or oneness. It goes beyond transient experiences happening to the individual self. Instead, it involves the dissolution of the self – the narrative constructed by beliefs, life experiences, accomplishments, and self-image. These are, at their core, mere thoughts. In awakening, you recognize your true identity as the essence of Being itself, the stillness behind all activity, and the silence within all sound.

Realizing the Essence of Awakening

Beyond Altered States: The Fundamental Shift in Identity

This recognition is not a mere thought; it represents a fundamental shift in the locus of identity. It's a fully embodied realization that reshapes how we perceive not only ourselves but life as a whole. While we're inherently in a state of awakened awareness, often gazing out through these eyes and experiencing life through these senses, true awakening occurs when we grasp the profound nature of this awakened awareness. It's a shift, known as "jnana" in Sanskrit, that can be tumultuous and take years to adjust to.

The Role of Spiritual Counseling

Navigating the Awakening Journey with Spiritual Counseling

In the tumultuous journey of awakening, spiritual counseling plays a pivotal role. It provides guidance and support as individuals grapple with the transformation of their consciousness. This guidance can be instrumental in helping people understand and integrate their newfound understanding of the self and reality. It's worth noting that spiritual counseling is not about achieving human perfection. Instead, it fosters an openness and acceptance of imperfection, allowing individuals to love and embrace themselves and their circumstances, regardless of how they unfold.
